Click to see full version Boone County, Kentucky (Est. 1799), was quite young when Meriwether Lewis came through in 1803. The county court met in a log courthouse at Craig's Camp (Burlington) in the northern interior of the county. While a few roads from Petersburg (settled 1789) and other river towns led to the courthouse, many others met at a site in southern Boone County that was already known around the world. America's third President Thomas Jefferson specifically directed both Meriwether Lewis and William Clark to visit this place, known as Big Bone Lick.
